Paper

The paper industry, particularly printing and writing paper, is by far the largest volume user of IM. The principal IM used in paper making are kaolin, talc, ground calcium carbonate, precipitated calcium carbonate and bentonite.

Minerals are either used as fillers or as a coating

he role of IM in pharmaceuticals falls into one of two main categories: excipient or active substance. The excipients have no intrinsic health benefit on their own; they are used solely as carriers, allowing the intake of minute amounts of active substances, in a practical way. Many cosmetics include significant amounts of IM. One familiar example is talc, but others like mica, silica or borates are also used, for their visual, abrasive or stabilising properties. A cultural heritage again? Earliest civilisations already made use of earth pigments for body painting .

Glass

Glass is completely a vitrified product which has no definite composition. The major ingredients form over 90% of all types of glasses are Lime (CaCO3), Sand (SiO2) and soda ash (Na2CO3). The raw materials used in the manufacture of glass can be broadly divided. into the following categories:

  1. Acidic oxides

  2. Basic oxides

  3. Cullets and

  4. Colouring matter

Metal casting & foundry

Very often in industrial processes, manufacturing relies not only on the principal component materials, but also on "processing aids" which make the fabrication of the finished product possible.

Metal casting is a major market for silica sand whose use goes back to the very beginning of the industrial revolution. Casting metal in sand has continued to be the cornerstone of many metal manufacturing processes and products.
